Did you ever wonder if you chose your profession wrong? Or if you haven’t studied hard enough back in school or uni? Or maybe you just want to find a new hobby and don’t feel like paying for it. Here’s my answer – Coursera, online courses for any purpose you can imagine.
Coursera gives you possibility to learn many different subjects, including: physics, engineering, humanities, medicine, biology, social sciences, mathematics, business, computer science, digital marketing…but most importantly – music related subjects!
The course I’m listening to right now is called History of Rock. Yes, you heard me! It actually has two parts, both already finished streaming live but it’s still available to listen online whenever you want. It tells you when and how a specific genre of rock started, presents most influential musicians who played important part at the time. Even though, music is not played at the background (it would be too expensive to buy the rights), they give you the names of the songs you need to listen to fulfill the studying experience. The best part of it is that all the courses are for free! Unless, you want to buy a certificate to show you have finished it.
If you’re a Rolling Stones fan, there’s a course called The Music of the Rolling Stones including band’s history starting from the roots of the band in the early 60’s to the release of It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll in late 1974. It’s presented by the same lecturer as History of Rock – John Covach, professor and director at University of Rochester, Institute for Popular Music.
The other one worth trying, presented by the same professor is The Music of the Beatles. It will walk you through the musical development of the band, starting from the earliest days in Liverpool and Hamburg, moving through the excitement of Beatlemania, the rush of psychedelia, and the maturity of Abbey Road.
Most of the courses are in English, although I found one presented both in English and Spanish. The course is called Modern Musician (El Músico Moderno). It states that it will provide you with a foundation in music theory, music production, and song writing, arming you with the tools you need to write and produce your own music.
There are so many other courses I’m interested in but since there are so many, I feel the need to be strict and choose the ones that will help me in the future or just interests me the most. Remember that at first it will excite you so so much but with the time it will get harder and harder to keep going. It really helps if you have an idea how that particular course will make your life easier when you finish it. But hey! It also has to be fun, so don’t push yourself too hard, do it when the mood is right. Happy Coursera’ing you all!
