Freaks On Floor is one of those bands that I’ve discovered only after they made it. For me it was a huge loss, to tell the truth, I was even embarrassed that I haven’t noticed them before. So here I am listening to their fourth album Waves, released recently, trying to sing along and thinking to myself that it’s a perfect hard rock and folk rock music mix. Starting with the song Star and finishing with Body and Soul, album mood swings manifesting the meaning of the album name. Speaking of the albums, Freaks On Floor have released all four by themselves, under no record label, so I can fairly say – this is true indie, boys and girls.
Freaks On Floor started their music career in 2007. Both main band members, Justinas and Rokas, were only in the 11th grade at the time. Now, as the band’s Facebook page states, there are three official members as bass player Julius has come back after a short break.
Freaks On Floor are:
Justinas Jarutis – guitar, vocals, lyrics
Rokas Beliukevičius – drums
Julius Valančauskas – bass
Stand Out Tracks:
Since it was our first interview with Freaks On Floor (hope not the last), we tried to keep it simple and fun.
We know that you guys made a pact to not leave the band for at least 10 years, how is it working out? Were there any doubts about it at any point in the band’s history?
Both: It was street music day in Vilnius, we were drinking beer in one cozy place dreaming and talking about what we’ll do in the future. Somehow one crazy idea came to us to meet at the same place after ten years to see what we’ve done. A month after this conversation we started “Freaks on Floor”. It’s a really great experience to work together all these years. There has been gigs and albums, there have been hard times, but we kept on going.
Rokas: My first job was a shoe salesman.
Justinas: I was working in a construction.
What 2 records would you take with you on a deserted island?
Rokas: Pantera “Cowboys from hell” Pink Floyd “Wish you were here”.
Justinas: Red Hot Chili Peppers “Blood Sugar Sex Magic”Bon Iver “Bon Iver”.
Do your moms listen to your music?
Both: Yes, our moms listen to our music.
If you could have lunch with any person, living or dead who would it be and what would you order?
Rokas: I would like to have a lunch with Henry Rollins.
Justinas: David Bowie, Prince and Rick Rubin at the same table. I would eat the stories they tell me.
What’s your favourite song to play live?
Rokas: My favorite song to play live is “Adolescence”.
Justinas: I think my favorite song to play live is “Evil Twin”. I love how audience is responding to it.
Huge thanks to Freaks On Floor for taking their time and making this interview happen. As we heard the album release concert was a huge success, also the biggest in band’s history.
